Day 2 – A Perfect Rainy Day [Maui 2026]

Being that Hawaii is a 3 hour time difference our first morning looked a little different. Archer typically wakes up at home around 630am, so today he was up and ready around 330am. I got up with him and played until it was time for his first nap around 5am. When he went down for nap this tired mamma also went back to bed. He was up again around 630am local time, and we all felt a lot more refreshed. At home, Ayla typically gets up around 7am, but here she slept until after 9am local time! She was tired from the long day of travel.

Maui was projected to get monsoon rain for our first full day, up to 4 inches was originally in the forecast. When I got up with Archer at 3:30am it was pouring and even though I couldn’t see the water, I could hear the waves roaring. Throughout the day the sky would just open up for short periods of time, but mostly it was a steady light rain. The total rain for the day ended up being less than 2 inches, but it made for a perfect quiet, getting settled day.

After breakfast we had my god-parents over to our condo. It was their first time meeting Archer and the love was instant. Ayla proudly showed them her room and enjoyed some playtime and story time with them. When it was time for Archer’s third nap of the day our company left and once Archer fell asleep us girls headed to the grocery store to pick up our food for the week.

Navigating all my food intolerances for Archer has been a challenge on island, as options are limited and prices are higher. For the airplane I baked chicken breasts the night before, diced them up and froze them, so when it was time for lunch on the plane the chicken was perfectly thawed. I wanted to follow this same kind of idea for beach food and for a busy, unpredictable week. So I bought frozen chicken breast, sausage & rice, avocado, apples, bananas & for snacks chips and salsa and wine.

On our first full day we of course had to end it at Monkey Pod for their happy hour – best mai tai around. It was Archers first restaurant experience and besides us arriving right at his typical bedtime he did excellent. He liked sitting in the highchair and playing at the table. But once he was ready to sleep he was quickly over it all. Luckily he nursed and fell asleep pretty easily. Monkey Pod was excellent in accommodating all the various intolerances, and for the first time in 6 months I ate a meal prepared outside of the house. They were able to modify the mai tai and I ended up having the keiki chicken. It was delicious! However, it has been so many months since I had fried food that my stomach definitely felt unsettled going to bed – but those fries were so worth it!

Unsure what tomorrow will look like since the rain is still in the forecast. AJ was supposed to go diving, but that got moved tentatively to Friday. So I am hoping for another slow start to this beautiful vacation.
