Day 12 & 13 : Heading Home

Our last full day on the island was a very mellow day; it was all about getting beach time, pool time and any last meals we wanted. We spent a good amount of the day packing up as well. We started the morning out at the pool and I got a workout done. The gym at the condo was BUSY, but it was a Sunday, so I wasn’t totally surprised. Ayla took about a 45 minute nap pool side and after she woke up she was ready to get swimming again. I enjoyed a poolside glass of wine and a makeshift charcuterie meal for lunch. After our pool day we went to Foodland to get my last poke meal. We also stopped at one of the best food trucks on island, Kina’ole Grill Food Truck – across from Kama’ole Beach Park (anything you get there will be good), and then headed back to the condo for our last beautiful Maui sunset.

The next day, our last day, we got up ate as much of our leftover food as we could and then headed to Kama’ole III beach, for our last ocean swim. The water was calm and we had several turtles swim by. After about an hour at the beach we headed back to our condo pool for one last pool swim. Then it was time to pack up and head to the airport. The plane ride back, while only 5 hours, was fairly turbulent, so we were very ready to be in Seattle. However, we were honored to be a part of the Fallen Soldiers Program, transporting a fallen soldier to Seattle. They had the military honor guard on the tarmac; full emergency services with lights on during the loading of the casket and when the captain spoke to the plane about transporting this soldier he got choked up discussing it. We had 12 people on flight as soldier escorts and when we landed in Seattle there were 100 people or more on the tarmac, including, what we believed to be, the family, ready to greet their soldier. It was a special moment to experience and discuss with Ayla.

We can’t wait to experience Maui again. Mahalo.
