Homemade Belgian Waffles with Ice Cream and Hot Fudge Sauce

This dessert is AMAZING! Buy a quality vanilla ice cream to top the waffles with. The waffles come out flaky but not too sweet and the fudge topping is addicting, be careful! This dish should be enjoyed on a special occasion or as a celebration. Nice thing is, you can make the waffle mixture and fudge mixture days in advance to help easy day of to-do list. Enjoy!

Waffles: Serves: 6 | serving size: 1 waffle

Fudge sauce: makes 2 1/4 cups -serves: 36 | Serving Size: 1 tablespoon

Ingredients:

  • Waffles:
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
    • 1 3/4 milk whole milk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 eggs
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • Bittersweet Hot Fudge (makes 2 1/4 cups -serves: 36 | Serving Size: 1 tablespoon)
    • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
    • 1/3 cup Lyle’s golden syrup or maple syrup and honey combined to make 1/3 cup
    • 2 tablespoon dark brown sugar
    • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
    • 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream

Directions:

  1. For Waffles:
    1. Melt butter in a small saucepan, let cool for 10 minutes
    2. In a medium bowl, whisk together milk, vanilla and eggs. Slowly whisk in melted butter.
    3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Add wet ingredients and mix until combined.
    4. Place in a large air tight container and refrigerate overnight (or up to 4 days).
    5. When ready to serve, make waffles on waffle iron, serve with ice cream and hot fudge.
      • Note: You can store waffles in freezer for up to a month in an air tight container.
  2. For Hot Fudge:
    1. Combine cream, syrup, sugar and cocoa powder in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes – stirring occasionally.
    2. Remove pan from heat, stir in chocolate, butter, salt and vanilla. Once chocolate and butter have melted strain mixture to remove any lumps.
    3. Let cool to room temperature before serving.
      • Note: This can be stored in fridge for up to 2 weeks in air tight container. Before serving gently reheat until mixture is pourable.
  3. To serve: Top waffle with 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream and 1 tablespoon fudge. Enjoy!
