I woke up today still with a fever and extremely low energy. Sightseeing yesterday really took it out of me. But we still caught the sunrise and walked to the koi pond so Ayla could feed the fish. We were hoping to go to the beach today, but I just didn’t have it in me.
But, we had a bakery recommended to use that is only 10 minutes away and today was one of the days they serve malasadas. So we packed in the car and headed out. I had AJ call me while he was inside Passion Bakery Café so I could still feel like I was part of the bakery experience. All of their malasada flavors sounded great, but I ordered the pog and raspberry filled ones and AJ got pog and Bavarian cream filled. WOW! These were AMAZING. They make them fresh to order and you can definitely taste it. I would highly recommend adding this place to your bakery list. We will be back for sure.
After breakfast my fever was intermittent so between fever breaks Ayla and I walked around the resort grounds taking pictures and just enjoying the weather. When my fever would start to come back we would go back and she would either draw or watch a show while I read. She has been great this whole trip letting me rest when needed.
Knowing we only had a few days left I wanted to enjoy a food truck meal and I was craving a good burger. Luckily there is a little food truck courtyard a block over from the resort so we walked there for dinner. Smash Time Grinds had great reviews and their burger pictures looked awesome. I ordered the Mango BBQ & Mango Bacon burger with the BBQ sauce on the side and a side of fries, AJ ordered the Teriyaki Chicken plate with mac salad. Both were outstanding and also definitely worth a visit. Some of the best fries too. If we had more time I would have gone back for another visit.
Day 9: Time to see a doctor…and the diagnosis is…
I woke up today and felt just as bad as 5 days ago, so I told AJ, I need to see a doctor. My fever wouldn’t break, even with taking medication every 3 hours and I can feel my body is getting tired of fighting off whatever this is. So, after looking for an in-network urgent care, we drove back to Koloa. Once checked in, I waited on their deck outside. They’re on the second floor so they had a great ocean view, which is nice, considering where you at.
After 3 hours….drum roll please…. I was diagnosed with viral pneumonia. Tested negative for covid and the flu.
I would cry if it didn’t hurt my lungs so bad. The doctor said my fever will eventually burn itself out, but I am contagious until it does. She also prescribed me an inhaler, antibiotics, steroids and prescription ibuprofen to take alternating with Tylenol. We fly out in 2 days, and she said by the time we fly I should start to see symptom improvements. They filled all my meds right away and I was able to start everything that minute, yay!
We figured while we were on that side of the island we might as well do a drive by of Poipu beach. It was busy, but even from just doing a drive by we saw a ton of turtles! Then we headed back to the condo to rest and let the meds start working. That evening, I really wanted to try fish and chips so I headed to Napali Brewing. I ordered their fish and chips and beer cheese pretzel bites, to-go of course. Their fish and chip is on another level! I got 2 HUGE fish fillets; no pictures did their size justice. They were larger than my hand, each! For $24 you get way more than what you pay for. So I ate half today and saved the other half to have as my last meal. After dinner it was quickly off to bed to hopefully get my first good night sleep in a week and I can wake up to enjoy my last full day here!
